Ben Hoffman's Cartesian Medium The Cartesian Medium The Cartesian Medium is a style of mathematical art. Designs in the Cartesian Medium consist of mathematical equations, and the generated graphs of those equations. The visual elements of images in these designs are described exactly by the associated equations. To create an image or shape from math, one only has to tie elements of the math to visual parameters. In the basic X,Y graphs taught in early math courses, the visual parameters used are the horizontal and the vertical. My designs are extensions of the same basic parent functions taught in school, only with a few more visual parameters and great deal more mathematical elements. In my designs, I always try to exploit the many links between the mathematical and the artistic; most of the designs I create begin with such a connection. Some visually pleasing elements can be modeled mathematically and some interesting math phenomenon take on beautiful visual forms. All of the Cartesian Medium designs on this website are calculated by myself and generated by graphing software I created. Enjoy! -Ben Hoffman CartesianMedium@gmail.com
